Re: Cad Layer Standards I know this is an older thread, but if you are preparing building or site drawings there is now a single definitive standard for CAD layers which is to be applied by all parties in the process: architects, structural engineers, MEP, etc. AIA CAD Layer Guidelines. These guidelines discuss layer name format, and provide exhaustive layer lists for over twenty types of layers. The Layer module includes new layers for distributed energy, real estate, survey/mapping, architectural, structural, architectural, fire protection, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and telecommunications. The AIA CAD Layer Guidelines defines layer naming strategies used throughout Digital Drawing for Designers. Discipline designators are the first letter used in each layer name. Major groups are four-character abbreviations that identify major building systems. Minor groups are four-character abbreviations used to further define the major group.
Use this procedure to create a layer standard, with default settings or based on an existing standard, that specifies naming conventions for layers in drawings.
If your drawing does not contain a layer standard, you can import a layer standard from another drawing or an AutoCAD Architecture template.
- If necessary, open the Layer Properties Manager by clicking Home tabLayers panelLayer Properties.
- Click .
- Click New.
- To base the new layer standard on an existing standard, select Based On, and select a standard.
- Enter a name for the new layer standard, and click OK.
- Edit the new layer standard:
If you want to… Then… specify component fields of the layer standard see To Edit Component Fields. specify descriptive fields of the layer standard see To Edit Descriptive Fields. specify the descriptions for the layer standard see To Edit Descriptions. specify the descriptive specifications of the layer standard see To Edit Description Specifications. - Click OK.

- Click Import/Export.
- Click Open.
- Select the drawing with the layer standards that you want to import, and click Open. All the layer standards in the drawing are displayed in the External File list.
- Under External File, select the layer standard that you want to import, and click Import. You can select more than one layer standard in a list by holding down Ctrl while you select the additional layer standards. If you import a layer standard that already exists in the target drawing, a message is displayed asking if you wish to overwrite the existing layer standard. Gravograph is400 troubleshooting. Click Yes to overwrite the existing layer standard, or click No to cancel.
- Click OK.
The layer standards that you imported are displayed in the Layer Standards dialog box.
